Since we first shared about the flash flooding that tore through Central Nepal, our teams have been mobilising fast.

Thanks to your generous support, as a first step, we are starting to provide shelter, hygiene and food items to hundreds of people. This includes tents, blankets, cookware, rice, lentils, oil, ready-to-eat food such as porridge, soap, sanitary pads, and more. We're scaling up fast, with further support planned as we reach more communities in the days ahead — in tight co-ordination with the Nepalese authorities and other charities rushing to provide aid. 

The extent of what's happened is still becoming clear. Over 500 people are confirmed dead and approximately 2,000 still missing in Nepal, according to the latest numbers. Sadly these numbers are still rising. Specific to Street Child’s core mission, we now know from UNICEF that at least 18 schools have been totally destroyed, and a further 20 substantially damaged. At least 10,000 children are suddenly out-of-school in the middle of the Nepali academic year — supporting these children back into education will become our major mission. 

And the threat hasn't gone away: a lake that formed when debris dammed a river upstream has already burst, sending a fresh surge of water downstream — and officials now fear rain expected this weekend could trigger further flooding and hamper rescue efforts. Either way, the threat of this second event is meaning everyone involved in the response is having to proceed with a lot of caution — and against a backdrop of fear.
