Street Child, an international children’s charity, is leading critical relief efforts in the aftermath of Cyclone Chido, which has caused widespread destruction in northern Mozambique.
Chido hit Mozambique on December 15 with winds of 160mph and 250mm of rainfall in the first 24 hours. The same cyclone had first wreaked havoc in the French Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte, before moving on to Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
The cyclone, which has impacted an estimated over 600,000 people in Mozambique, has left families in the Mecúfi district facing devastating losses. The district was the hardest hit when Cyclone Chido made landfall, with an estimated 100% of homes in Mecúfi destroyed.
