This is Kamila's story

Street Child

Kamila is a 25-year-old teacher who lives in a remote village in Afghanistan with her husband and children. This is her story.

Kamila and her family have been displaced numerous times due to conflict. Despite being a qualified teacher displacement meant that Kamila was unemployed for three years. When the Taliban took over in Afghanistan, she lost all hope. Her family struggled economically, and she relied on her brothers for financial support.

In the village where her family had settled there were no education facilities for over a decade. As a result, most children were illiterate. In response, Street Child and their local partners established a community-based class. Knowing that Kamila was a successful and experienced teacher, she was employed as a teacher for this class. Kamila’s own children now attend the classes alongside 30 other girls and boys. Kamil aearns a monthly salary, meaning she can support her family, and is now the sole breadwinner.

Young girls in Kamila’s village look up to her as a female role model. They are excited about studying and do not see their gender as a barrier to being educated. Kamila is proud to have shared the power of education onto the young girls in her village.
