Amazing learning gains in Somalia and Somaliland

Education Interrupted

Happy New Year! As we kick off 2026, we want to share some truly inspiring news – and a little urgent. First, the incredible progress children in Somalia and Somaliland have made thanks to your support. Then, we'd love to invite you to join us THIS Wednesday evening 7th Jan at Accenture in London to hear the latest on our work directly from Street Child's senior programme leaders – and how we're responding through our Education Interrupted appeal, which is still very much live with all donations MATCHED. Read on for more!

Amazing learning gains for children in Somalia & Somaliland

Street Child and partners have achieved some of the most powerful education results we've ever seen by working with nearly 20,000 conflict-affected children across Somalia and Somaliland.

What is the programme?
We aimed to help children who had been attending school but in reality, learning little. Over a five-month period, we used an adapted 'Teaching at the Right Level' approach, grouping children according to their learning level rather than age or years spent in school. Through activity-based learning designed to build foundational reading and arithmetic skills, children learnt at a pace appropriate to their level.

The results were extraordinary:

  1. In Somaliland, the number of children who could read a simple story jumped from 33% to 75%.

  2. Those able to do multiplication and division soared from 12% to 50%.

  3. In Somalia, literacy proficiency more than tripled – from 19% to 61% – and numeracy nearly tripled too.

In Somaliland, the share of children who could do basic math like division and subtraction jumped from just 6.5% to 53% - in just 5 months!

Join us THIS Wednesday evening in London

If you're in London this week, we'd be thrilled if you could join us for an intimate evening with Street Child's senior programme leaders as they share more about our latest programmes, plans and the impact of aid cuts on children's access to education.

Drawing on insights from some of the world’s most fragile contexts, our programme leaders will explore what shrinking education budgets mean for children and communities, and how Street Child is responding through initiatives backed by our Education Interrupted appeal.

Our 'education interrupted' appeal is still live - and all donations are matched

While we are incredibly proud of the results in Somalia and Somaliland, these gains are at risk. Aid cuts mean the future of programmes like this, despite their extraordinary results, is uncertain. Education is being deprioritised around the world despite the increased need. In Somalia and Somaliland alone, conflict, poverty, and climate shocks keep 60–70% of children out of school.

That's why our Education Interrupted appeal is so critical – and it's still very much going. We are doing everything we can to mitigate the worst impact of these cuts on children in Street Child-supported communities around the world.

Thanks to your generosity, we've raised £172,000. If you are still able to give, your donation will be MATCHED, doubling your impact. Your support will help protect hard-won learning gains and keep thousands of children in school.
