The Street Child Spotlight

November has been another busy month at Street Child! Our Christmas campaign is in full swing, backed by singer-songwriter and musician Sampha, inspiring supporters to give the gift of education this festive season. We’re also making incredible progress with our Education for Every Child Today (EFECT) project, enrolling over 48,600 children in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Our very first Everest Base Camp challenge was a success! A determined group of trekkers not only made it to base camp but also had the incredible opportunity to visit Street Child of Nepal projects along the journey, witnessing firsthand the impact of their support. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, we’ve opened seven Digital Learning Centres, creating safe spaces for children amid the ongoing conflict. Read on to discover more.

Street Child launches Christmas campaign with support from musician Sampha!

Do you remember what you unwrapped for Christmas last year? A novelty mug? A pair of festive socks with Rudolph’s face? These gifts bring moments of joy—but imagine giving something that endures far beyond the holidays.

This Christmas, we’re thrilled to share that our campaign has already been backed by Mercury Prize-winning artist Sampha and featured in The Sun.

As Sampha shared: "Sierra Leone is a country that’s deeply personal to me – it’s where my parents are from, where much of my family lives, and an ongoing source of inspiration for my music. In 2017, I supported Street Child’s emergency response to the devastating mudslides in Freetown and witnessed how their work creates real, lasting change. Since then, the charity has continued to make an incredible impact, transforming the lives of over one million children in more than 20 of the world’s poorest and most disaster-affected countries. This Christmas, I’m proud to support their ‘Give the Gift that Lasts All Year’ campaign. For just £1 a week, we can give a child the opportunity to go to school for a year – a gift that lasts long after the festive season. It’s a simple way to make a huge difference in a child’s life."

This Christmas, we'd love for you to set up a regular gift. No matter the size, your monthly contribution will have a lasting impact:

  • £4 could send a child to school for the year

  • £12 could send three children to school for the year

  • £20 could support a rural teacher in West Africa

For millions of children, education is the key to a brighter future—a gift that keeps giving long after the wrapping paper is gone. Your monthly support can open doors for children to learn, grow, and build a life filled with opportunity.

If you set up a regular gift of over £4 by 13th December, we'll send you a free pack of five beautiful Christmas cards. These cards are our way of saying thank you, while providing you the opportunity to share the joy of giving with your friends and family. Even better, your regular gift will provide vital resources for children’s education, creating a lasting impact throughout the year.

an update on our biggest programme to date: education for every child today

We’re halfway through our flagship Education for Every Child Today (EFECT) project aimed at addressing the education crisis and removing barriers for out-of-school children in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. In partnership with the Education Above All Foundation (EAA)’s Educate A Child programme, we’ve spent the last two years enrolling marginalised primary-aged children in education through social work, economic support for families, and school construction/refurbishment

Thanks to our fantastic local partners, we’ve made significant strides toward our goal of providing access to primary education to 96,000 children. By June 2024, over 48,600 children had been enrolled in school through EFECT across all three countries, achieving 50.7% of our target! The 97% retention rate of the 16,800 children enrolled during the project’s first year indicates that our approach – engaging families and addressing major barriers to education – is effectively keeping children in school.

street child supporters reach everest base camp!

Last week, our incredible group of trekkers reached Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas, standing tall at an elevation of 5,364m! This unforgettable adventure offered supporters the chance to achieve a bucket-list milestone while directly engaging with Street Child’s work in Nepal. Participants visited local schools and saw firsthand how we’re transforming education for children in some of the world’s toughest places.

Every penny raised by our trekkers will help keep children safe, in school, and learning.

street child opens seven digital learning centres in Ukraine

In Ukraine, our team and local partners have recently built and opened seven Digital Learning Centres, creating safe spaces where children can access education and mental health support amidst an ongoing conflict that has now surpassed 1,000 days. This programme has been made possible thanks to the support of our corporate partner, Infosys.

As many schools continue to operate online, these centres offer children the invaluable opportunity to learn in person and spend time with their friends.

For some, this marks the first chance to learn face-to-face in over four years.

Many of the children attending these centres are internally displaced, having fled Eastern Ukraine, and the centres aim to provide not only education but also safety, stability, and much needed support.

When asked about their hopes for the future, one student shared: “We dream to stay alive and see ourselves go to high school.”

The launch of these Digital Learning Centres is just one part of Street Child’s ongoing work in Ukraine. Many of our programmes are focused along the contact line with Russian forces, where the situation remains volatile and uncertain. In these challenging areas, Street Child’s local partners are often among the only organisations providing critical support to children and their families.
