Today marks 100 days on from the devastating flooding and mudslides in Freetown.
On Monday 14th August an estimated 1,000 people died when an entire mountainside collapsed in the capital of Sierra Leone. Huge boulders, dislodged by rain, left a two-mile trail of destruction – flattening everything in its path.
Street Child was one of the first major agencies to launch an emergency appeal. Your incredible support meant we were able to respond immediately, providing emergency relief when it was needed most.
Working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week for over a month, Street Child’s team of local staff:
distributed 87,142 ready-to-eat food packages
provided 5,874 packs of clothing, 2,094 towels and 3,236 toiletries
reached 9,727 people with community sanitation advice
provided 13,242 wet food meals
distributed 1,105 bedding packages
We couldn't have done this without your help. Thank you.
100 days on from the devastating mudslide and there still thousands of families who need our help.
The Sierra Leone government has begun to close down the camps housing the survivors, leaving many with nowhere to go. Street Child's Cecelia spoke to The Guardian about the uncertain futures facing many of the survivors.
We want to support those families impacted by the mudslide and flooding to rebuild their lives.
At our Winter Ball for Freetown last Saturday we celebrated the incredible commitment of our local teams who worked tirelessly to respond to the crisis and together we raised over £50,000 for vulnerable children and families in Freetown and across Sierra Leone.
Thank you to those of you who joined us for a fantastic evening.
Over the next three months, Street Child hopes to raise a minimum of £1 million to support thousands of vulnerable children and families across West Africa. There are loads of ways to get involved with our Right to Learn appeal and join us in giving thousands of children a brighter future.
Through UK Aid Match, until 15th February, the UK government will match all eligible donations to our Right to Learn Appeal, pound for pound, doubling the power of your donation. Be part of something incredible this winter.
