Mozambique cyclone response fund

On December 15th, Cyclone Chido struck northern Mozambique, leaving 90,000 children at risk and devastating communities already displaced by conflict. Mecufi, a key district where Street Child operates, has been hardest hit—entire villages were levelled, leaving families without homes, schools, or basic necessities.

The families affected by this disaster were already among the most vulnerable, having been displaced by war and living in extremely precarious conditions before the cyclone struck. Many had so little to begin with, and now they have lost everything.

Street Child is on the ground in Mecufi, leading the response with support from UNICEF and local organisations. Together, we are distributing vital supplies, including tents and construction kits, to help families rebuild. Temporary children’s play centres have been established, and local volunteers have been trained to provide mental health first aid and safeguarding support. We are prioritising support for vulnerable households, such as those led by caregivers with disabilities, grandparents, or children.

Many children are showing signs of acute emotional distress, including fear, grief, and anxiety. To help them heal, Street Child is organising play-based activities and offering sports, games, and creative outlets to restore a sense of normalcy and resilience. At the same time, we are working to restore access to education by preparing to set up temporary learning spaces and laying the groundwork to rebuild schools, ensuring children can continue their education and regain a sense of stability.
