Conflict in the Northeastern states, related to the Boko Haram insurgency, continues to threaten the very existence of schools in Nigeria. Armed groups are systematically targeting students and teachers, threatening, abducting, and killing them. In December 2020 alone, over 300 students were abducted in Katsina state, Nigeria by armed assailants.
However, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Street Child is desperately defending these children's right to education in conflict-affected communities, such as Adamawa state, particularly addressing barriers for vulnerable girls. We are working to provide livelihood and tailored support to ensure 1,000 girls remain in school. Street Child has created gender-friendly and protective learning environments to reduce the risks these girls face. However, the UN estimates that $1.1bn will be needed for North-East humanitarian assistance in 2022.
